Frequently Asked Questions

Is it really random?

Yes. Each color comes from your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, and about 16 million colors have an equal chance. The page skips a small share of codes that could read as rude on a classroom screen.

What is a hex code?

It’s the six-character code that web pages and design apps use for a color, like #2E86AB. Copy it from here and paste it into the color field of the app you’re using.

What does the color name mean?

It’s a plain guide worked out from the color’s hue and lightness, such as a warm red or a pale blue, not a standard name. Colors just short of gray don’t get one, because no fair name is near.

Can I pick several colors at once?

Yes, up to 12 at a time. Each one has its own Copy button, and Copy all copies every code, separated by commas.

Can I use it as a color palette generator?

For ideas, yes. Set How many to 5 and press Generate until a set catches your eye, then press Copy all. The colors are picked at random, so they won’t always go well together.

Is this a color picker?

It picks a color for you. If you’d rather choose one yourself, the color picker in your design app is the better tool, and you can paste a code from here into it as a starting point.

Why is the text black on some colors and white on others?

So the code is easy to read. Each swatch uses whichever of the two stands out more on that color, always at a contrast of at least 4.5 to 1.

What can I use it for?

Art projects, design ideas and picking a team color. For classroom art, generate one color and have everyone make something using it, or generate three and mix them in paint.

Can I show it on a projector?

Yes. Open the page on the classroom screen and press Generate. One color fills the stage, with its code large enough for the back row to read.

Are my colors saved?

No. The colors are picked in your browser and nothing about them is sent to us. Last results are gone when you reload or leave the page.

Is it free?

Yes. There’s no sign-up and nothing to install.
