Random Letter Generator
Random letter generator: pick a letter from A to Z, one or up to 26 at once, with no repeats, vowels only or no hard letters. Free for class and games.
How to Use It
- Set how many letters to pick, up to 26.
- Turn on No repeats if each letter should come up only once.
- Choose Uppercase or Lowercase, and All, Vowels or Consonants.
- Turn on Leave out hard letters to skip Q, X and Z.
- Click or tap Generate, or press Enter in the How many field.
- Read your letter. With several, each sits on its own tile, and Copy lets you paste them somewhere else.
- Need an earlier one? Your last 8 results stay under Last results until you reload or leave the page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it really random?
Yes. Every letter you’ve left in has an equal chance. Each one comes from your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, and the page draws again whenever a draw would favor some letters.
Can I avoid repeats?
Yes. Turn on No repeats and no letter comes up twice in the same result, like pulling tiles from a bag. If you ask for more letters than you’ve left in, the page says so. Each press of Generate is a fresh draw, so a letter can come back next time.
Can I pick several letters at once?
Yes, up to 26 at a time. Each one sits on its own tile, so a result reads as letters, not a word. Ask for 26 with No repeats and you get the whole alphabet in a random order.
Can I show it on a projector?
Yes. Open the page on the classroom screen and press Generate. One letter shows very large, so the back row can read it, and your browser’s zoom makes a long list bigger too.
What are the hard letters?
Q, X and Z. Few words start with them, so they can stall a round with younger players. Turn on Leave out hard letters and they won’t come up.
Which letters count as vowels?
A, E, I, O and U. Y counts as a consonant here, so Consonants gives you the other 21 letters.
What games can I play with it?
Letter games and naming games. For a category game, generate a letter, then race to name an animal, a food and a place that start with it. Or go round the room and have each person say a word that starts with it.
How can I use it for phonics and spelling?
For phonics practice, generate a letter and have the class say its sound and three words that start with it. For a spelling warm-up, generate five letters and see who can spell the longest word using them.
Are my letters saved?
No. The letters are picked in your browser and nothing about them is sent to us. Last results are gone when you reload or leave the page.
Is it free?
Yes. There’s no sign-up and nothing to install.
