Why use a fraction wheel

Sixteen fractions are on the wheel, from halves to tenths. Spin one and shade it on a shape, spin two and say which is bigger, or add them together.

  • Shade the fraction on a shape

Students spin a fraction and colour that part of a circle or a bar.

  • Compare two fractions

Spin twice and the class says which fraction is bigger, and why.

  • Turn a fraction into a decimal

Spin one and ask for the decimal or percentage.

This wheel wears the Big Spin Theory theme: a science lab: graph paper, beakers and an atom for a hub. Your own copy keeps it, or pick another wheel theme.

How to use the fraction wheel

  1. Click the wheel to spin it.
  2. Wait for it to slow down and stop on a random entry. The winner pops up on screen.
  3. Click “Hide & Respin” to take the winner out and spin again, so nothing is picked twice.
  4. Click “Create your own fraction picker” to save your own copy, change the entries, and share or embed it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I compare two fractions?

Turn them into the same bottom number, or into decimals: 3/4 is 0.75 and 2/3 is about 0.67, so 3/4 is bigger.

Is the wheel really random?

Yes. Every entry has a slice of the same size, and where the wheel stops is picked with your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), so nobody can predict or rig the result.

Can I change the entries on this wheel?

Yes. Click “Create your own fraction picker” to save your own copy. You can then add, remove or rename entries, change the theme and spin settings, and share or embed your wheel.

Is it free?

Completely free, with no sign-up needed. Create a free account only if you want to keep your wheels together.
