Why use a Chinese zodiac wheel

The 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac take turns, one a year, so every animal comes back every 12 years. Each slice shows an animal with its next or latest year. Spin one, then count back in twelves to find the family birthdays that share it.

  • Find the animal for a birth year

Spin an animal and count back 12 years at a time to find who in the family shares it.

  • Practise counting in twelves

Teachers can spin an animal and ask the class which years before and after belong to it.

  • Play a guess-the-animal party game

Each guest spins an animal in secret and acts it out until someone guesses it.

This wheel wears the Twist of Fate theme: the wheel of fortune card: midnight indigo, gold stars and the zodiac. Your own copy keeps it, or pick another wheel theme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the year start on 1 January?

No. Each zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year, between 21 January and 20 February, so someone born in early January belongs to the year before.

Is the wheel really random?

Yes. Every entry has a slice of the same size, and where the wheel stops is picked with your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), so nobody can predict or rig the result.

Can I change the entries on this wheel?

Yes. Click “Create your own zodiac animal picker” to save your own copy. You can then add, remove or rename entries, change the theme and spin settings, and share or embed your wheel.

Is it free?

Completely free, with no sign-up needed. Create a free account only if you want to keep your wheels together.
